STAYED at Dover AFB Fam Camp, DE
Today’s plan is to head to a beach for part of the day. I went out for a 4-mile run, taking the rubberized track they have that starts at the Fam Camp. Not an exciting trail - it just goes around the end of the airfield - but it was comfortable to run on.
We headed to the beach, about 45 minutes away. Went to Henlopen State Park to walk on some trials first. Little did we know, they have some really awesome bike trails there, and it being a Sunday, there tons of people riding their bikes. We wished we had brought ours with us on this day trip, but we also might have a hard time keeping Ruby to the right with all the traffic. (She is still learning!) We got into the park for free (would have been $10 for out of state) since we have the handicapped All Access pass (thanks to Michael’s VA disability). I suppose we could use it when it is hanging in the windshield to park in handicapped spots, but we’ve never done that. I can only see us doing that when there is no where else to park and/or we are going to be really quick.
Anyways, Ruby just wanted to go to the beach to play in the sand and the water. We wanted to explore a little first. We heard lots of whining and complaining and “how much longer are going to be” the whole time. I was telling her to knock it off, basically yelled at her “stop complaining” as we were approaching another family, and the mom immediately said “you sound like me! I’m so glad it’s not just us!” No lady, it’s not just you! Dang kids!
The walking trail we were on was a mix of sand and hard pack. The sand was more difficult to walk on, and Ruby filled her shoes with sand. Of course. So we had to stop to empty a lot of sand out of her shoes by the time we made it to the pier. We walked out to the end of the pier then back. This part of the park is along a bay, so the waves were very gentle and tiny, like a few inches tall. Very calm water, and there lots of families with small kids along the shore.
We went back to the truck and headed to a different part of the park to go the beach. We ended up on a stretch of the park where they allow vehicles (4x4) so long as you have a shore fishing permit (we did not bother trying to get one, we didn’t even have fishing gear with us, so we just parked and walked to the shore). There were TONS of vehicles lining the beach! Luckily, we went to the end and it really wasn’t all that crowded at all. We spent maybe an hour there - we didn’t have sunscreen and didn’t bring any shade, so we didn’t want to turn into lobsters.
On the way back we hit up another brewery - Dogfish Head Brewery. Sampled some beers, Ruby got a frisbee and a root beer, and we just relaxed for a bit before heading back to the trailer.
